- Disk space: Your authorized account allows you to log on to the department computers, and gives you a personalized piece of the department's UNIX file system. Graduate students and faculty receive 4096 MB of file space Mind this quota and periodically tidy your directories by deleting or compressing your files (see UNIX: Introduction: Files and Directories), because if you exceed this quota, you won't be able to log on to the computers anymore. To check how much of your filespace quota has been used, open a UNIX terminal window and type quota -v. You can also use the command listjunk to do a recursive search of your directory for junk files. The command rmjunk (on the login machines only) will then remove these files.
- Printing: Your authorized account also lets you use department printers. You are allowed to print up to 250 pages per month on the grayscale printers free of charge. Remember that each side of a printed sheet counts as a page since our printers do duplex printing by default. After that you will be charged 5 cents per page rounded down to the nearest whole dollar amount. Printing on the color printer costs 60 cents per page rounded down to the nearest whole dollar amount. To check how much of your monthly page quota has been used, open a UNIX terminal window and type pages. Pages are counted only if they are successfully printed.
